The Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII) is a flagship national initiative dedicated to advancing high-impact healthcare innovation, translational research, and state-of-the-art medical services in India. Established through a strategic partnership between the Government of Assam and IIT Guwahati, AAHII is envisioned as a long-term platform to strengthen healthcare outcomes, research excellence, and innovation-led economic growth.

The foundation stone of AAHII was laid on 14 April 2023 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, underscoring the institute’s national significance and strong alignment with India’s healthcare and innovation policy priorities.

AAHII is being developed as a multi-disciplinary healthcare innovation ecosystem, integrating advanced clinical care, biomedical and engineering research, digital health and medical technology development, and capacity building. The institute is designed to enable seamless bench-to-bedside translation, foster close collaboration between clinicians, scientists, and engineers, and accelerate the development and adoption of scalable healthcare solutions relevant to India and other emerging economies.

Governance and execution are anchored through the Assam Government–IIT Guwahati Healthcare Foundation (AGIHF) , a Section 8 (not-for-profit) company established to ensure strong institutional governance, financial discipline, and strategic oversight. AGIHF provides a credible and transparent platform for public funding, private investment, philanthropic participation, and global collaborations, supporting phased development and long-term sustainability.

The name AAHII draws inspiration from the Sanskrit word “Ātmā” (आत्मा)—the soul or essence of life—reflecting the institute’s foundational philosophy. Guided by this ethos, AAHII is committed to advancing health through scientific rigor, ethical practice, and patient-centred innovation, with a focus on creating enduring societal value.

With its scale, academic anchoring, and strong policy support, AAHII is poised to emerge as a national reference institution and a strategic platform for investment in advanced healthcare infrastructure, research capabilities, and innovation-driven health systems.
